12 missing in trawler capsize in central Bangladesh

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- At least 12 people went missing as an passenger trawler capsized in the river Padma following a collision with a cargo ship at Vedarganj upazila (sub-district) in the country’s central Shariatpur district Saturday morning.

About 10 to 12 passengers of the boat managed to swim ashore after the accident occurred at about 9am (local time). Local people rescued some them, according to reports.

The rest passengers of the sunken the boat that was carrying over 25 people are still missing. The boat passengers, mostly day laborers, were going to Narayanganj in search for work.

Deputy Commissioner of Shariatpur district Sarwar Hossain visited the spot and reportedly said fire brigade divers were called to salvage the sunken trawler.
