Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Leaders of the country’s 28 trade bodies, including the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) have urged all parties to reach a consensus on holding national elections under an independent, neutral and strong election commission, instead of a caretaker government.

“Holding general election under an independent and strong election commission is only constitutional way which, on the one hand, would guarantee the right to elect a people’s government and, on the other, would help establish the process of forming democratic governments on a permanent and strong footing”, they said in a joint press statement on Wednesday.

The statement also said elections should take place in the country in line with other countries practicing parliamentary democratic system of governance.

The leaders of the trade bodies opposing the caretaker government (CG) system said every time the vanquished in general elections held under the caretaker governments had questioned the polls results.

The leaders have expressed the fear that the country might face a constitutional crisis in the event of the disruption in the process of forming a proper democratic government. “And the country would plunge into deep political and economic crises, leading to an anarchic situation.”

It said there could be an uncertainty over the selection of the next of head of caretaker government as the opposition party has already raised questions about the neutrality of the former chief justice who retired recently.
