30 wounded as apparel workers clash with police in Saver

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- At least 30 workers were injured in a clash with the police on Tuesday, when the workers of a sweater factory blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway at Rajfulbaria of Savar for about an hour, demanding for their arrears and reopening of the factory.
Several hundred workers of DNS Sweater Ltd at Rajfulbaria blocked the busy Dhaka-Aricha highway in the morning demanding arrears and reopening of the factory, witnesses and the police said.
The workers also vandalized shops and vehicles on the road and suspended traffic movement for an hour, the witnesses said.
The Ashulia industrial police rushed the spot and charge baton and fired rubber bullets to disperse the agitated workers.
The injured workers were admitted to the different hospitals and clinics at Savar.
Workers said the management of the factory kept the operation of the unit closed since December 15 without assigning any reason and notifying the workers.
They also said that they were yet to get their wages for November.
The workers demanded wages for November and December and immediate reopening of the factory.
Ashulia industrial police deputy director Ali Ahmed Khan said the management of the factory assured them of paying the wages to the workers on January 10, 2013.
With the assurance, the workers withdrew their blockade and said they would go for tougher agitations if the management failed to keep the words.
