40 feared dead as bus plunges into river in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- At least 40 people were feared dead on Sunday after a bus packed with passengers lost control and plunged into the Turag river at Aminbazar in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka, police said.

Police said only eight passengers managed to swim ashore. Of them, Monowara Hossain, a third year student of microbiology department of Jahangirnagar University, breathed her last soon after she was taken to a nearby hospital.

The bus of Boishakhi Paribahan boarding nearly 50 passengers fell into the river immediately after the driver of the bus lost control over the loaded vehicle at about 11:00 am when it reached Salehpur Bridge at Aminbazar, the Financial Express (FE), a local newspaper, reported quoting witnesses.

One of the eight survivors, Tapan (25), told reporters that he had seen some 40-50 passengers stuck inside the sunken bus.
