Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) cancelled membership of 445 garment factories for the year 2014 due to non-compliance and non-payment of annual fees.

The action was taken at the board meeting held at its headquarters in the capital Dhaka on Tuesday.
Since 2002 till date, membership of a total of 1654 factories has been cancelled by the apparel apex body.

Of them, the BGMEA cancelled membership of 502 factories in 2002, 586 units in 2012, 101 in 2013 and 20 others on different occasions, the BGMEA said in a statement.

“Those factories failed to comply with the rules and regulations including non-payment of annual fee with other charges and safety and compliance issues,” it noted.
Currently, the number of BGMEA-listed factories came down to 4222 from 5876 earlier across the country.
