Savar, Bangladesh (BBN)-Six persons including the manager of Bangladesh Commerce Bank’s Kathgora branch were killed during a robbery in broad daylight in Ashulia on the outskirts of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, on Tuesday.
Abu Sadek Md Sohel, the managing director (MD) of the bank, confirmed the death to the BBN.
At least 10 people were also injured in the incident.
The deceased are: Mohammad Waliullah, the manager of the bank, a security guard, three customers and a robber, the MD of the bank said.
Locals caught two of the robbers during the incident and gave them a good beating. One of the robbers died in the mass beating while another was handed over to police.
According to MD Md Sohel, the robbery took place around 1:45pm.
Witnesses said a gang of robbers equipped with arms and local weapons entered the bank in the guise of customers and made the bank staff hostage and looted nearly BDT 6 lakh from the counter.
As the bank officials obstructed them, they stabbed five of them.
Meanwhile, hearing the robbery announced from a local mosque, locals cordoned off the bank to catch the robbers.
In a bid to flee the scene, the robbers opened fire indiscriminately, leaving a number of people injured.
They also blasted several hand made bombs to make their way out.
At one stage locals managed to catch two of the robbers and gave them a mass beating, leaving one of them dead.
The injured bank staff and locals were rushed to Enam Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared the five including the bank manager dead.
On information, police rushed to the spot and managed to recover BDT 5,94,000 from the robbers, the MD said.
