Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-A Bangladesh court sentenced three high officials of Adflame Pharmaceuticals to 10-year rigorous imprisonment for manufacturing adulterated drug that left 76 children dead in the 1990s.
On December 19, 1992, the case was filed against five officials of Adflame for producing Flammadol, a brand of paracetamol syrup, which tested positive for the toxic chemical Diethylene glycol, in tests conducted both at home and abroad.
Judge Abdur Rashid of Dhaka Drug Court Tuesday afternoon convicted Director of drug manufacturing company Adflame Dr Helena Pasha, its manager Mizanur Rahman and quality in-charge Nigendra Pasha Bala.
The court also fined them BDT 2 lakh each.
It also discharged Md Noman and Abjar Pasha, two of the accused in the case, as they were proved innocent.
The court, in its verdict, said the convicts are sentenced with the highest penalty as they committed crimes against society and humanity.
Of the accused, Md Noman, Abjar Pasha and Nigendra Pasha Bala are on the run.
