Last updated: September 20, 2009

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated across Bangladesh on Monday if the moon of the holy month Shawal is sighted on Sunday.

If the moon is not sighted on Sunday, the Eid will be celebrated on Tuesday ending the month-long fasting of Ramadan.

Preparations have been made for holding Eid-ul-Fitr jamaats in the capital, Dhaka and other districts across the country.

A three-day government holiday begins on Sunday for the Eid festival. However, the government has announced extension of the vacation by a day up to September 24 (Wednesday) if the moon is not sighted on Sunday.

"If the moon of the holy month of Shawal is sighted Sunday, the holy Eid-ul-Fitr will be observed in a befitting manner all over the country the next day," an Islamic Foundation press statement said.

Dhaka City Corporation will organize a total of 362 Eid congregations, including the main one at the National Eidgah at 9:00 am (local time).

Five Eid congregations will be held at Baitul Mokarram National Mosque at 8am, 9am, 10am, 11am and 12noon.

Besides, more Eid congregations would be held at all major mosques, Eidgahs and open spaces in the city as elsewhere across the country.

The country's biggest Eid congregation will be held at Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj.
