Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – The central bank of Bangladesh has opened a letter of credit (LC) for importing paper from Germany to issue 200 million more pieces of BDT 2.0 denomination notes to meet the growing demand for the same, officials said.

“We’ve opened the LC as per instruction of the government,” a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) told BBN in Dhaka. “The central bank is providing both coins and notes of BDT 1.0 and BDT 2.0 denominations in line with the market requirements.”

Currently, the finance ministry as the custodian of the treasury, issues notes and coins of BDT 1.0 and BDT 2.0 denominations. The rest from BDT 5.0 to BDT 1,000 are bank notes which are released by the BB, the country’s central bank.

The central banker also said the BB is set to issue 50 million pieces of BDT 2.0 denomination currency notes shortly after receiving the imported paper.
Rest of 150 million pieces BDT 2.0 denomination currency notes will be issued phase by phase, he explained.
