Last updated: January 14, 2010

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Six Bangladeshi peacekeepers engaged in U.N. Peacekeeping Mission in Haiti are now well and safe after a devastating earthquake struck the Caribbean island-nation.

Communications between the UN and the Bangladeshi peacekeepers there have been reestablished. Six Bangladeshi policemen--four Inspectors, one Sub-Inspector and one Sergeant-working in UNPOL “are now safe and well”, a police headquarters announcement said on Thursday.

Among them, Inspector Khandaker Hossain Ahmed, Inspector Abu Bakar, Inspector Shah Kabir and Sergeant Marian Miah are working at Port of Prince, the capital of Haiti, while Inspector Kaiser Ali and Sub-Inspector Abu SM Kamrul Ahsan are working at Mirebalais.

Hundreds of thousands may have perished, but there was no firm count in Tuesday’s quake, which spared not part of the capital, Port-au-Prince, close to the epicenter.

The 7.0 magnitude quake struck shortly before 5 pm on Tuesday, and was centered about 10 miles (15 kilometers) southwest of the capital Port-au-Prince, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
