Jamaat calls strike for Thursday in Bangladesh

Last updated: November 2, 2014

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called a 24-hour countrywide strike for Thursday protesting the death penalty awarded to its leader Mir Quasem Ali for war crimes.

The party called the strike immediately after a special tribunal in Bangladesh Sunday handed down death penalty to Ali for him crimes against humanity that he had committed during Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971.

Ali, 62, was the third most powerful man of the Al-Badr force – an auxiliary force of Pakistan army – during the country’s Liberation War.
