Bangladesh’s default loans cross BDT 572bn in Q3
The amount of default loans in the country’s banking system increased further in the third quarter (Q3) of 2014 as a portion of rescheduled loan turned into classified ones. According to provisional figures, the volume of non-performing loans (NPL) increased by 11.40 per cent to BDT 572.00 billion in the July-September period of 2014 from BDT 513.44 billion in previous quarter of this calendar year. It was BDT 481.72 billion in the Q1 in 2014.
Bangladesh’s banks continue to slash deposit rates
Country’s commercial banks continued to slash the rate of interest on deposits following rising trend in excess liquidity in the banking sector due to lower credit demand, bankers said on Friday. According to the central bank latest data, the weighted average interest rate on deposit in the banking sector came down to 7.48 per cent in September last from 7.63 per cent a month ago. It was 7.71 per cent in July 2014.
Bangladesh’s private sector credit growth rises in Sept
Private sector credit growth increased slightly in September as the overall import payment increased significantly in the first quarter (Q1) of the current fiscal year (FY) 2014-15, bankers said. Purchasing raw hide of sacrificial animals during the Eid-ul-Azha festival has also contributed to raise the private sector credit growth during the period under review, they added.The private sector credit growth rose to 12.15 per cent in September 2014 on a year-on-year basis from 11.39 per cent in August. It was 11.25 per cent in July.
Bangladesh Bank makes financial inclusion for street children
In Bangladesh, child labour is a fact of life: about 7.4 million children aged 5-17 are estimated to work to support their families, or simply to survive. Some of them return home at night while others live full-time on the streets, but all face an issue often overlooked by NGOs and policy makers focusing on their basic needs: how do they keep the money they earn safe? Bangladesh law permits children aged 14 and over to engage in non-hazardous work, but their economic activity had been unmatched by services that enable their money to work for them, the Guardian reported.
Zimbabwe fold for 374 as Jubair claims maiden 5-for
Jubair Hossain clinched his maiden Test five-for to fold Zimbabwe’s first innings at 374 runs on the third day of third Test at Chittagong. His five wickets earned the Tigers a 129-run lead, which was later extended to 152 during the final half an hour of the play. Bangladesh openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes added 23 runs to the home side with 10 wickets remaining in the 2nd innings.
Check papers before renting flats to foreigners: DMP
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have asked house owners to check relevant papers before renting out flats to foreigners. Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Nazmul Alam made the call on Friday. Addressing a press briefing, Alam said they have started a drive to detect foreigners staying illegally here.
