Bangladesh banking sector sends relief materials to Nepal

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Country’s banking sector has delivered 56,328 pieces of blanket and 5,507 pieces of tarpaulin to Nepal.
Twenty seven commercial banks and member of the BLFCA (Bangladesh Leasing and Finance Companies Association) had provided those relief materials in response of the Bangladesh Bank (BB), the country’s central bank calls for the Nepalese people who have been severely affected during the recent devastating earthquake.
“We’ve the responsibility to make our services more humane, and respond to any disaster or human losses as part of our social responsibilities,” BB Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman said while addressing a programme titled CSR Support to Nepal on behalf of Financial Sector of Bangladesh, held at a city hotel on Monday.

Recognising that the BB, besides its core responsibility of maintaining price and macro stability, has been motivating all banks and financial institutions into a broad range of direct and indirect CSR engagements, the governor added.

Under the CSR umbrella, the central bank has taken a number of noteworthy initiatives such as supporting the victims and volunteers of Savar Tragedy with the contribution of one day salary of our employees. Also BB and all other non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs) came forward with immediate cash support from their CSR fund to stand by the Rana Plaza victims.
BB Governor Dr. Rahman thanked the contributing banks for being so generous and prompt to response to Nepal's distress call. “I believe that the religion of the whole mankind is the same. It should be our first and foremost obligation to stand beside somebody who is in distress and in need of support.”
Among others, H. K. Shrestha, Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh, S. K. Sur Chowdhury, Deputy Governor of the BB, M. Mahfuzur Rahman, Executive Director of the central bank and Ali Reza Iftekhar, chairman of the Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB) spoke on the occasion.
