Last updated: November 30, 2010

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The countrywide dawn-to-dusk general strike enforced by opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) continues amid sporadic incidents of violence, vehicle damage and detentions in the capital Dhaka and other parts of the country on Tuesday.

Police picked up at least 26 people from in front of the BNP’s Paltan office, Mohakhali and Dhaka court premises in the capital during the hartal hour, according to reports.

On November 22 this year, the BNP announced the 12-hour general strike, popularly known as hartal, demanding actions to resolve the miseries of the people, save democracy and defend the nation's interest.

The vehicular movements are thin on the city streets. All educational institutions and business establishments remain closed in the capital following the strike.

Additional police have been deployed at all the strategic points in the capital to maintain law and order.
