Survey says Bangladesh’s 6.5 million people of suicide-prone

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- About 6.5 million people of Bangladesh are suicide-prone. A total of 128.8 people among 100,000 commit suicide a year. Among them, 89 per cent are women, most of whom are unmarried.

This disclosure came from a survey report of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, Dhaka under the auspicious of Health Department which was revealed at a press conference in the capital, Dhaka on Saturday.

The six-member team led by Dr AHM Feroz and Dr SM Nurul Islam of the medical college conducted the survey at Mominpur union of Chuadanga district from January to April 2010.

Deterioration of inter-personal relation, long-term problem and drug addiction are the main causes of suicide, according to the report.
