Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Fazle Kabir, a former finance secretary, is appointed as the governor of the Bangladesh Bank on Tuesday, hours after the resignation of Dr Atiur Rahman over the heist of $101 million.
A government high official confirmed the appointment to the BBN around 1:30pm.
Mr Kabir is now the chairman of the board of directors of the Sonali Bank Limited.
He is now in New York to attend an official visit.
He will take the helm of the BB after his returning home on March 18, the sources added.
Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman stepped down Tuesday amid criticism over US$101 million heist by hackers from Bangladesh Bank account with the New York Federal Reserve Bank.
Mr Kabir joined the Sonali Bank on May 5 in 2015.
Prior to his joining to the bank, Mr Kabir was the finance secretary of the Government of Bangladesh.
In June 2012, the government had made Fazle Kabir the finance secretary.
Kabir was the railway secretary before joining as the finance secretary.
He started his professional career in the Bangladesh Civil Service (Railway: Transportation and Commercial) cadre back in October 1980.
Later he joined the BCS (Administration) service in October 1983.
During his 34 year tenure in the civil bureaucracy Mr Kabir served in various key positions in different ministries as well as in the field administration.
He served as the Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Kishoreganj, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Director General of the National Academy for planning and Development & BCS Administration Academy.
During his career, he represented Bangladesh in many conferences abroad and also actively participated in state level negotiations at home and abroad.
He led the Bangladesh delegation to the United Nations Finance and Budget Committee sessions in October 2008.
He was born in a respectable Muslim family of Munshiganj.
