Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)– Family members of death-row war crimes convict Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali met him Kashimpur Jail on Saturday as his execution looms following his decision not to seek clemency.
A total of 47 members of the convicted war criminal entered the suburban prison in six vehicles at around 3.45 pm, as they were asked to meet the 63-year-old Jamaat leader by the jail authority.
On Friday, Mir Quasem confirmed that he is not going to seek any clemency from the President.
A day after Mir Quasem declined to seek presidential clemency, the prison authorities called the family members in the morning and asked them to meet him at 3:30pm, a relative of Mir Quasem, told media.
The jail authorities usually ask family members of a death row convict to meet him for the last time before execution.
Security measures have also been beefed up around the Kashimpur jail area. Two security posts — one set up by the Jail authorities and another by district police – have been posted outside the jail premises.
Top jail officials including Additional Inspector General of Prisons Iqbal Hassan visited the prison on Saturday.
Mir Quasem, who led ruthless militia Al-Badr in Chittagong to commit crimes against humanity in 1971, is now kept at a condemned cell in the jail.
After he gave his decision, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam on Friday said there is no legal bar now to execute Quasem as he has decided not to seek presidential clemency.
