Last updated: October 25, 2008

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Three Bangladeshi companies have taken a joint move with leading book-publishers of India, Singapore and UK to halt the piracy and also to make the prices of English medium text books cheap for local students.

Under the move, Dhaka-based Nabarun Publication, World Book Distributions Centre and Boi Bilash have already signed agreements with Oxford India, Orient Blackswan (formerly Orient-Longman), Dreamland, Allied, Nelson and S Chand of India on marketing of English medium books in Bangladesh.

Market operators said the move will help develop the country's knowledge industry as low quality books, mostly pirated have affected the industry.

"We hope English medium students (O-level) of Bangladesh will be able to get a text book within a price limit of only BDT 300 instead of Tk 1200 due to our new efforts," said Md Mozibur Rahman, Proprietor of Nabarun Publications was quoted by the Financial Express, the country’s lone financial daily, as saying.

He also said the three Bangladeshi book publishers are also planning to launch similar marketing initiative with Singapore and England.
