Bangladesh’s stocks finish lower for second day

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Bangladesh’s stocks extended losing streak for second consecutive session on Thursday, the last session of the week, as risk-averse investors continued on selling spree.

Both bourses – the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) started with a gloomily mood in the morning which gradually fell as the selling spree continued.

DHAKA STOCK EXCHANGE:

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), finished at 4,636.23 points, losing 21.98 points or 0.47 percent over the previous day.

The two other indices also closed in the red. The DS30 comprising blue chips fell 5.79 points or 0.32 percent to settle at 1,751.44 points.

The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) lost 3.25 points or 0.29 percent to close at 1,109.81 points.

Turnover, the important indicator of the market, stood at BDT 6.06 billion, which was 2.53 percent lower than the previous session’s turnover of BDT 5.91 billion.

The losers took a strong lead over the gainers as out of 323 issues traded, 197 closed lower, 88 closed higher and 38 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

Doreen Power Generations and Systems dominated the DSE turnover chart with some 2.79 million shares worth BDT 335 million changing hands, followed by MJL Bangladesh BDT 245 million, KDS Accessories BDT 221 million, Lafarge Surma Cement BDT 171 million, and Mithun Knitting BDT 159 million.

National Tubes was the day’s best performer, posting a 9.98 percent gain, while Deshbandhu Polymer was the worst loser, slumping by 9.90 percent.

Among major sectors cement, fuel and power, telecommunication, bank and pharmaceuticals outperformed the market while the remaining underperformed.

Chittagong Stock Exchange:

The port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also ended lower with its Selective Categories Index - CSCX – plunging by 25.44 points to settle at 8,675.35 points.

Losers beat gainers as 144 issues closed lower, 65 closed higher and 26 remained unchanged on the CSE.

The port city bourse traded 11.68 million shares and mutual fund units’ worth over BDT 492 million in turnover.
