Nepal president asks parties to form consensus govt by Aug 21

Last updated: August 15, 2011

Kathmandu, Nepal (BBN)- Nepal President Ram Baran Yadav on Monday asked the parties to form national consensus government by August 21 in line with its interim constitution.

The president initiated the process for the new government formation soon after Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal tendering his resignation to him Sunday evening.

As per the constitutional provision, if the political parties fail to form government on the "basis of political consensus" within the stipulated time, they may request the president to extend the deadline for the formation of such a government.

The president will then invoke article 38 (2) of the interim constitution asking the parties to form a majority government through a vote in the parliament.
