Bangladesh’s stocks down further amid sluggish turnover

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Bangladesh’s stocks extended the losing streak for the third day in a row on Sunday as cautious investors continued to book profit on sector specific large-cap stocks.

Brokers said sell-off on sector specific large-cap issues, especially from bank, financial institutions and power sectors dragged the market down for another session.
Following the previous week’s marginal gain, the key index of the country’s prime bourse advanced 3.06 points while the Selective Category Index of port city bourse gained 12.91 points at 10:45am.
However, after 30 minutes of trading, the prime index of the major bourse stands at 5,732, losing 3.91 points while the Selective Category Index of port city bourse advanced 7.44 points at 11:00am.
At 12:00 noon, the DSEX tried to gain but failed and rest of the session fell gradually.
The key index DSE went down 35.61 points while the Selective Category Index losing 67.83 points at the closing.
DHAKA STOCK EXCHANGE:
Finally, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) went down by 35.61 points or 0.62 per cent to close at 5,701 points.
The two other indices also end lower.
The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, fell 14.63 points or 0.68 per cent to settle at 2120 points.
The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) lost 8.45 points or 0.64 per cent to close at 1,304 points.
Trading activities fell further and the total turnover amounted to BDT 7.77 billion, which was more than 25 percent lower than the previous day’s value of BDT 10.16 billion.
Out of 328 issues traded, 214 closed lower, 86 closed higher and 28 remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.
Saif Powertec dominated the DSE turnover chart with shares of more than BDT 343 million changing hands, followed by Ratanpur Steel Re-rolling Mills, Beximco, Brac Bank and City Bank.
Hakkani Pulp and Paper was the day’s best performer, posting a 8.99 per cent gain, while Trust Bank was the worst loser, slumping by 15.92 per cent following its price adjustment after record date.
CHITTAGONG STOCK EXCHANGE:
The port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), also closed lower with its Selective Categories Index - CSCX – losing 67.83 points to settle at 10,719.
Losers beat gainers as 148 issues closed lower, 69 closed higher and 20 remained unchanged on the CSE.
The port city bourse traded 16.36 million shares and mutual fund units’ worth BDT 475 million in turnover.
