$1b for Rooppur nuke power plant
Dhaka and New Delhi have signed a $4.5 billion credit agreement with a provision for spending nearly one fourth of the amount on Bangladesh's first nuclear power plant at Rooppur. Through this deal, India becomes a party to the civil nuclear programme to be implemented by Russia.

Apparel manufacturers urge govt to ensure stable power, gas prices
Apparel manufacturers have urged the government to ensure stable prices of power and gas to help boost their businesses along with long-term policy support to remain competitive in the global market. At a roundtable at a Dhaka hotel on Wednesday, the participants discussed the readymade garments sector’s (RMG) present situation and possible moves to improve while some of them also called for efficient functioning of all of the country’s ports.

BTRC dept for curbing foreign dominance in VAS entity
The engineering and operations department of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has proposed that the commission should not allow foreign entities to hold controlling stake in a telecommunication value added service providing entity. The E&O department of the commission came up with the proposal in its observation on the draft guidelines titled ‘Regulatory Guidelines for Issuance of Registration Certificate for Providing Telecommunication Value Added Services in Bangladesh’, a senior official of the commission told New Age.

Central bankers of Ghana, Nepal, Nigeria now in Bangladesh
A total of 21 central bankers of Ghana, Nepal and Nigeria are now in Bangladesh aiming to promote sustainable finance through sharing experience with local bankers and stakeholders. A three-day meet on sustainable finance with delegates from these countries central banks began in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday to facilitate sound environmental and social practices by banks.

Suspend suspicious agents: BB
Bangladesh Bank (BB) has asked 17 banks providing mobile financial services to suspend agents who are suspected of being involved in dubious transactions. The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), the central bank's anti-money laundering wing, gave the order on September 26.

FRC to start registration of all auditors soon
The newly-formed Financial Reporting Council (FRC) plans to have all qualified auditors registered with the regulatory body in quest for accountability and transparency in the auditing of financials. Under provision of the law that brought the council into being, all auditors and audit firms must register with the FRC. Without registration, none can provide auditing service to any entity linked with public interest.

Dhaka seeks UN support
Bangladesh on Wednesday sought support from the United Nations to ensure return of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals to their homeland. Foreign minister AH Mahmood Ali made the request when Bangladesh and Myanmar were engaged in finding out ways of how to resolve the issue of residents from the Rakhine State who crossed borders to Bangladesh.

Cashless is the way forward: Jaitley
Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, a promoter of cashless economy, yesterday said cash leads to tax evasion, corruption and affects the poor. “And in fact, excessive cash operates against the poor,” he said at a talk on the macroeconomic initiatives of the government of India.
