Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - Four people were killed and more than 450 people including 100 police wounded as the police fired gunshots and teargas shells and charged with truncheons at activists of the BNP and its allies when they brought out processions in places across the country on Sunday.
Two people were killed in Lakshmipur and two more in Chandpur on the day when the police fired on demonstrating BNP activists and supporters, according to reports. A large numbers of activists were also injured in Kishoreganj Jamalpur, Dinajpur, Bandarban, Kurigram, Brahmanbaria, Tangail and Natore districts.
Sunday was the day for the opposition parties to hold anti-government protests across the country to mainly demand reinstatement of the caretaker government system.
The district units of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) announced to enforce general strike in Lakshmipur and Chandpur for six hours beginning at 6:00am on Monday in protest against the killing.
Addressing a media briefing at BNP central office at Naya Paltan in Dhaka Sunday afternoon, the party's acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded exemplary punishment for the persons responsible for the killings.
Meantime, police formed two separate committees to investigate the Chandpur and Laxmipur incidents, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hassan Mahmood Khandker told reporters at the Police Headquarters in Dhaka Sunday afternoon.
The committees, to be headed by Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Biswas Afzal Hossain, were asked to submit reports in seven days.
