Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - The upcoming interim government, which is in the process of formation, will take final decision on the six contractual Bangladesh Bank high-ups, who were forced to resign in the face of the demonstration on Wednesday.
In the setback of brewing protest, Mezbaul Haque, the spokesperson of the central bank, held a press briefing hours after the untoward incident in the history of the BB took place.
The government of the country had appointed the contractual persons in their posts, so it is the government’s jurisdiction to make the decision whether their resignation letters will be accepted, the BB spokesperson said.
Sources said, around 200 officials and employees of the Bangladesh Bank begin the demonstrations on the bank’s premises since this morning demanding resignations of all contractual posts of the central bank – four deputy governors, BFIU head and BB policy advisor and governor. They termed the top officials of the central bank as henchmen of bank-looters.
“The upcoming interim government will take final decision on the six Bangladesh Bank’s top officials,” the spokesperson said.
Mr Haque, also an executive director of the central bank, assured that the routine work of the BB will continue as usual.
Earlier, at one stage of the mayhem, central bank DG-1 Kazi Sayedur Rahman was forced to tender his resignation signing on a white paper.
The incident took place just two days after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina from the post of the prime minister, who fled the country amid spiralling protests over security forces brutality and killing of over 400 people, ending a 15-year rule of the Awami League.
The demonstrators claimed that two other DGs – Md Khurshid Alam and Dr Md Habibur Rahman – and head of BFIU Masud Biswas agreed to submit their resignations shortly while Policy Advisor of the BB Abu Farah Md Nasser is seen left the office amid the demonstration. Md Khurshid Alam did not turn up to the office today.
On the other hand, Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder did not show up in his office for last two consecutive days after stepping down of the Awami League government, sources added.
Another DG Nurun Nahar will continue home office until the new interim government is formed and appointed one to take the helm of the central bank, the protestors added.
DG Nurun Nahar will have to carry on administrative approvals of regular activities. Officials said, Nurun Nahar will approve their salaries and allowances for the time being and will have to resign as well after new deputy governors are appointed.
