6 High-Ups Of Bangladesh Bank Forced To Resign

Last updated: August 7, 2024

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) – Six contractual high officials of the Bangladesh Bank including Deputy Governor (DG-1) Kazi Sayedur Rahman resigned today in the face of the demonstrations carried out by the officials and employees of the central bank.

The protestors claimed that the deputy governors and governor were helping the bank-looters.

Sources said, around 200 officials and employees of the Bangladesh Bank begin the demonstrations on the bank’s premises in Motijheel, the commercial hub of the capital, since this morning demanding resignations of all contractual posts of the central bank – four deputy governors, BFIU head and BB policy advisor.

At one stages, they forced the DG-1 to tender his resignation signing on a white paper.

The incident took place just two days after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina from the post of the prime minister, who fled the country amid spiralling protests over security forces brutality and killing of over 400 people, ending a 15-year rule of the Awami League.

The demonstrators claimed that two other DGs – Md Khurshid Alam and Dr Md Habibur Rahman – and head of BFIU Masud Biswas agreed to submit their resignations shortly while Policy Advisor of the BB Abu Farah Md Nasser is seen left the office amid the demonstration.

On the other hand, Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder and Md Khurshid Alam did not turn up to the office today.

Another DG Nurun Nahar will continue home office until the new interim government is formed and appointed one to take the helm of the central bank, the protestors claimed.

The army personnel deployed earlier in the setback of the political turmoil on the central bank premises intervened at one stage and the situation is now under control.
