Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - After fighting for his life for six days, Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson for Inqilab Moncho, passed away on Thursday night at Singapore General Hospital.
Inqilab Moncho confirmed his death in a Facebook post around 9:40 pm.
Dr Md Abdul Ahad, resident physician of the Department of Neurosurgery at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and member secretary of the National Health Alliance (NHA), reportedly said they have been informed that Hadi’s body will be brought back to Bangladesh on Friday morning.
Meanwhile, the BNP expressed deep sorrow over the death of Sharif Osman Hadi in a Facebook post. Hadi was an independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency.
Earlier on Wednesday night, Singapore’s Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan visited Hadi at the hospital and later called Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at around 9:40pm to inform him that Hadi’s condition was extremely critical.
Hadi, a potential candidate for Dhaka-8 in the upcoming national election, was shot in the head on Friday (December 12) in the Old Paltan area of the capital. According to investigators, an assailant opened fire on him from a motorcycle that had been following him while he was travelling in a battery-powered rickshaw for electioneering.
He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery due to massive brain injury. Doctors at DMCH described his condition as extremely critical, saying the bullet entered above his left ear and exited through the right side of his head, severely damaging the brain stem.
Hadi was later transferred to Evercare Hospital for advanced care and was airlifted to Singapore on December 15.
Law enforcement agencies have identified Faisal Karim Masud as the shooter. Police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said Faisal’s associate, Md Alamgir Sheikh, was riding the motorcycle used in the attack. Several investigation sources said both suspects fled to India after crossing the border illegally.
An attempted murder case was filed with Paltan Police Station on December 14 by Abdullah Al Jaber, member secretary of Inqilab Moncho.
So far, police and RAB have detained and arrested 14 people in connection with the attack, including Faisal’s father Md Humayun Kabir, 70, mother Mosammat Hashi Begum, 60, wife Saheda Parvin Samia, and brother-in-law Wahid Ahmed Sipu.
