BNP sees budget ‘anti-people’

Last updated: June 8, 2012
Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The main opposition BNP has identified the national budget for fiscal 2012-13 as 'anti-people’ saying that the financing of the proposed budget would not be possible, which would lead to chaos in the economy.
BNP standing committee member MK Anwar, MP made the comment at the party chairperson's Gulshan office in the capital Dhaka on Thursday after reviewing the national budget.
Finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith proposed BDT 1917.38 billion budget outlays for the FY’13 in the National Parliament with a Gross Domestic Production growth (GDP) of 7.2 per cent.
“The budget does not contain anything that can bring any good for the people. It is an anti-people budget,” MK Anwar said, adding that the Awami League government does not have the capability to implement the budget.
BNP leaders Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Dr Osman Farruk, Amir Khashru Mahmud Chowdhury and Abdul Awal Mintu, among others, were present at the budget observation and review team.
About black money whitening provision, Mr. Anwar said the government has patronized corruption through providing the scope to whiten black money.
He also trashed the finance minister’s GDP projection, saying that 7.2 per cent GDP growth would not be achievable in the next fiscal year.
The BNP leader quoted GDP projections of various organizations like the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Asian Development Bank and Centre for Policy Dialogue, and said, “7.2 percent GDP projection is baseless.”
