Bangladesh’s apparel owners declare closure of Ashulia units

Last updated: June 16, 2012
Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Owners have declared shutdown of all apparel factories in Ashulia on the outskirts of the capital for an indefinite period from Sunday.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) took the decision on Saturday while the factory owners were losing production due to the unrest in the industrial zone.
"We’re losing production every day. Now, we can hardly tolerate further. So, we have decided to close more than 300 factories in Ashulia area," BGMEA President Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin said at a press briefing at its office in the capital Dhaka.
"We’re the victims of a conspiracy," the BGMEA chief said adding it is the responsibility of the government to find out the real culprits and bring them to book.
