Government decides to suspend agro-credit recovery in Aila-hit areas

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Bangladesh government Monday decided to suspend recovery of agro-credit in cyclone `Aila' affected areas, officials said.

The decision was made at a cabinet's regular weekly meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said.

Besides, the prime minister in the meeting assigned four ministers to the emergency task of supervising the relief and rehabilitation operations in the Aila-hit areas of the country’s costal districts.

The cabinet meeting thoroughly discussed the damage and destruction caused by the cyclone `Aila' in the country's vast southern coast on May 25 and decided to suspend recovery of agricultural loans in the cyclone hit areas and reconstruct the damaged embankments immediately, the press secretary told reporters after the meeting.

Mr. Azad said 51 upazilas (sub-districts) of 11 districts have been affected by the cyclonic storm Aila, which took a human toll of 179 lives by official count to date.
