Minister says govt to protect RMG makers from highway robbery

Last updated: October 3, 2012
Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Home Minister Dr MK Alamgir has assured the readymade garments (RMG) makers of protecting them from highway robberies, a major concern for the RMG owners.

"We've directed the law enforcers to check highway robberies. I hope this (robbery) will soon be stopped," the home minister said when a BGMEA delegation met him at his Secretariat office in the capital Dhaka on Tuesday.
Second Vice-president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) M Siddiqur Rahman led the delegation.

The government is keen to provide all out cooperation and security to RMG makers and their industrial units, the minister said, adding: "We'll take adequate initiatives for support from financial institutions."
Garments accounted for nearly 80 percent of the country's $22.93 billion exports in the fiscal year 2011-2012. The industry employs around four million people and most of the workers are women.
