Sheikh Hasina reelected AL president

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Sheikh Hasina was reelected president of Awami League (AL)for the seventh time while Syed Ashraful Islam retained his general secretary post in the national council of the ruling party on Saturday.
 
Proposed by AL leader Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim and supported by Syed Ashraf, Hasina was elected unopposed.
 
AL leader Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif proposed Ashraf’s name while Jahangir Kabir Nanak supported him as the general secretary of the party.
 
Sheikh Hasina, also the prime minister, inaugurated the 19th council of the party earlier in the day at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital Dhaka..
 
As many as 20,000 delegates, 6,300 councilors and workers of the party and associates thronged to the council ground from across the country with colourful banners and festoons and portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
 
According to the Awami League's party constitution, the council session is held every three years.
