Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - The government has appointed new ambassadors and high commissioner of Bangladesh to the United States, India and Myanmar, an official announcement said on Tuesday.
Akramul Qader has been appointed as the next Ambassador to the United States while retired foreign service officer Ahmed Tariq Karim will become high commissioner in New Delhi.
Major General Anup Kumar Chakma, serving as Master General of the Ordnance of Army Headquarters, was made ambassador to Myanmar.
Mr. Qader had held the office of high commissioner to South Africa in 1999, concurrently accredited as high commissioner to Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Switzerland and Lesotho.
He also served as ambassador to Thailand in 1996 and concurrently served as ambassador to Cambodia. He was the permanent representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.
Mr. Karim, who joined government service in 1967, took optional retirement on January 1, 1999.
He was ambassador in Washington from March 14, 2001 to January 15, 2002.
Anup Kumar Chakma was commissioned in the Infantry Regiment on December 25, 1977 and promoted to the rank of Lt Col in 1992.
Mr. Chakma was promoted to colonel in 2000 and commanded a sector of the Bangladesh Rifles and an infantry bridge before being elevated to the rank of Brig Gen in 2001.
He was later made Maj Gen in 2005 and appointed the Master General of the Ordnance of Army Headquarters.
