BNP withdraws Thursday strike in Dhaka district

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The main opposition BNP withdrew daylong strike called for Thursday in Dhaka district to pay respect to President Zillur Rahman who died in Singapore.
Abdul Mannan, president of Dhaka district unit of BNP, told reporters about the withdrawal decision at party chairperson’s Gulshan office around 9:00pm in the capital Dhaka.
President Zillur Rahman died at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore at 4:47pm Bangladesh time on Wednesday. He was 84.
Earlier, the district unit was scheduled to enforce the shutdown in Savar, Dhamrai, Keraniganj, Nawabganj and Dohar upazilas of the district, keeping out the Dhaka City Corporation out of the purview of the strike, generally known as hartal.
Mr. Mannan, addressing at a press briefing at the BNP central office on March 13, threatened to enforce the daylong shutdown if the government does not release the 154 opposition leaders and activists by March 20.
