Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is set to grill Partex Group Chairman MA Hasem and his two sons on Tuesday in connection with non-payment of around BDT 1.50 billion to a branch of the state-owned Sonali Bank Limited, officials said.

Partex Sugar Mills Limited, a manufacturing unit of the Partex Group, opened two letters of credit (LCs) for importing raw sugar with the Bangabandhu Avenue branch of Sonali Bank in 2011.

The company imported 30,000 tonnes of unrefined sugar against the LCs and sold it in the local market, but did not reimburse the money to the bank, an ACC official said.

The ACC has already formed a six-member committee headed by its deputy director Mir Zainul Abedin Shibli to investigate into the matter.

As part of the investigation, the committee is scheduled to interrogate Mr. Hasem who is also chairman of the Partex Sugar Mills and Showkat Aziz, managing director and Rubel Aziz, director of the mill.

“We will file a case against the persons if they failed to prove that they were not involved in the alleged financial irregularities,” the ACC told BBN in Dhaka on Monday.
