Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Agrani Bank Limited has launched ‘agent banking’ service to provide rural people with necessary banking and financial services at their doorsteps and faster pace than banks’ branches.
Agrani Bank will initially operate such services in Pangsha of Rajbari and Shahastaganj of Habiganj through its vender organization ‘DOER’ for three months as a pilot scheme.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the state-owned commercial bank Syed Abdul Hamid formally launched the service at a program held at its headquarters in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday.
“Farmers will be able to open account at BDT 10. The agent bank will bring more people especially small and marginal farmers under the institutional financial system,” he said.
Besides dealing with government pension allowance, salaries of teachers, stipends of students, allowance for elderly persons, the agent bank will disburse and collect loans, receive various bills and provide remittance delivery, he added.
Deputy Managing Director AKM Mujibur Rahman and Chairman of ‘DOER’ Dr AK Abdul Mubin spoke on the occasion.
Bangladesh Bank (BB) has already created the necessary foundation for the agent banking by introducing mobile banking that already got a good response especially from rural people.
The agent banking had already been proved a success in many countries including Australia, New Zealand, France and Brazil.
