Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Aguri Wireless Broadband Bangladesh Limited has been awarded license to operate WiMAX or Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Manzurul Alam handed over the license to Aguri's representatives NH Chowdhury and Sayed Farhad Ahmed at a function, held at the BTRC's office in the capital, Dhaka on Sunday.

Three companies, namely Bangla Lion Communications, Brac Bdmail Network Ltd, and Aguri Wireless Broadband Bangladesh Limited, quoted BDT 2.15 billion to win the licenses on September 24 to operate the WiMAX service in Bangladesh.

The companies won the licenses as they emerged top three bidders in an open auction organized by the BTRC, according to reports.

According the BTRC, the licenses are initially being offered for a term of 15 years. On expiry of the tenure, a license may be renewed for subsequent terms, five years each, subject to approval from the commission and such other conditions, including payment of fees specified by the commission.
