Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Awami League-blessed candidates achieved landslide victory in the fifth and final phase of the upazila election on Monday, thanks to vote rigging.
With the triumph, the ruling party men retained 225 posts while its arch rival BNP 157, according to unofficial reports.
Of the rest upazila parishad chairman posts, Jamaat-e-Islam, the key ally to BNP-led 19-party alliance, got 35 while Jatiya Party, the main opposition party in parliament, obtained only three posts and 35 positions were gained by other parties.
On Monday, 73 upazilas of the country went to election amid stay incidents like vote rigging, boycotting of polls by opposition candidates and snatching of ballot papers by the ruling party men.
The voting that started at 8:00am continued till 4:00pm without any break.
