Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-The ruling Awami League-endorsed candidates have declared the mayor in the three city corporations of Bangladesh Wednesday morning.
The ruling Awami League had picked up Annisul Huq for Dhaka North City Corporation, Sayeed Khokon for Dhaka South City Corporation and AJM Nasir Uddin for Chittagong City Corporation.
Tuesday’s three city corporations elections were marred by the widespread allegations of vote rigging, stamping ballot papers, stuffing of ballot boxes, intimidation and threatening of BNP-endorsed candidates, barring BNP polling agents from entering the polling centres, casting fake votes.
Terming the polls farcical and bringing those allegations, all BNP mayoral candidates boycotted the city elections when the polling went on for nearly four hours.
All three BNP-endorsed mayoral candidates – Mirza Abbas, Tabith Awal and Majur Alam – and independent candidate Zonayed Saki withdrew or boycotted the election on the basis of the allegations.
BNP’s pull out, made the elections insignificant for the ruling Awami League.
It also apprehended the impending political turmoil in the country, experts said.
Meanwhile, the United Nations, US and UK have expressed their disappointments over the widespread allegations on the city polls.
Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed during an official briefing to inform the nation on the polling situation on Tuesday, expressed his gratitude to all for helping him in holding the election what he termed as “free and fair”.
Like the CEC, the ruling party top-ups also expressed their satisfaction with the way the election was held, defying the extensive criticism flooded in the social media.
