California, US (BBN)-Global search engine giant Google has officially announced the roll out of the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for compatible devices.
This is notably the first major update to Lollipop since Android 5.0 first made its debut in November 2014, reports the India Today.
The Mountain View-Based took to its official Android blog to make the formal announcement regarding the roll out.
"Today we are rolling out Android 5.1 - an update to Lollipop that improves stability and performance and offers a few new features like support for multiple SIM cards, Device Protection and high definition (HD) voice on compatible phones," quotes the blog.
The new Android 5.1 Lollipop update focuses greatly on support for features that would in turn depend on extra software to work.
Quite obviously then features like multiple SIM cards and high-quality HD voice calls that the update brings to the table will not be compatible with all devices unless they support these features.
The new update brings device protection for stolen phones; hopefully you'll never have to use it.
But it's heartening to see the feature out there in compatible devices just in case.
With device protection in place and enabled from your settings, your lost or stolen device will require your Google account sign-in for access.
The device will remain locked until the time the user signs in with your Google account.
Moreover, your phone will stay locked even when someone resets it to factory settings.
Gone are the days when some miscreant gets hold of your device, wipes the storage and uses it as their own or trade it off illegally.
"This feature will be available on most Android phones and tablets shipped with Android 5.1 in addition to Nexus 6 and Nexus 9." Quotes the blog.
The new update also brings HD voice calling on compatible devices.
"Get crystal clear calling with HD Voice between compatible Android 5.1 devices like the Nexus 6 on T-Mobile or Verizon." adds the blog.
In addition, the update will let you control your WiFi networks and Bluetooth devices right from the quick settings area.
