Sylhet, Bangladesh (BBN)-Unidentified assailants stabbed dead blogger Ananta Bijoy Das in Sylhet, a north-east city of Bangladesh, Tuesday morning.
Mohammad Rahmatullah, the additional deputy commissioner (media coordinator) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, confirmed the death to the BBN.
Das was the key organiser of Sylhet Gonojagoron Mancha and regularly wrote for Muktomona, a blog, founded by Avijit Roy, another blogger who was stabbed dead in February in Dhaka.
Four masked assailants stabbed and hammered Das, a relentless writer on science, to death around 8:30am, nearly 100 feet away from his residence at Subid Bazar in Airport Police Station of the city, the ADC said.
Das died on the spot. His body was kept at the Sylhet M.A.G. Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy, the police official added.
Bijoy was banker by profession and, along with blogging, was the publisher of a science magazine.
The attack is third such deadly assault since the start of the year.
Avijit, a Bangladeshi-born US citizen, was stabbed dead while he was returning from Amar Ekushey Book Fair in Dhaka on February 26.
The murder comes just a week after al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) claimed responsibility for the deadly attack on Roy in which his wife was also badly injured.
An Islamist has been arrested over his murder.
Another atheist blogger, Oyasiqur Rahman, was stabbed to death in Tejgaon area of Dhaka on March 30. Two madrassa students have been arrested over that attack.
Ahmed Rajeeb Haider, a blogger, an architect, and an activist of the Shahbagh Gonojagoron Mancha movement, was stabbed dead in Pallabi area of Dhaka on February 15, 2013.
On November 15 last year, unidentified assailants stabbed dead Prof Shafiul in broad daylight near his Choddopai residence near the Rajshahi University.
