Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Apparel workers flew into fury and blocked the Gazipur-Tangail highway in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur following the rumour of a fellow worker’s death in a road accident on Monday.
Traffic on the highway remained halted for two and half hours due to the blockade.
A bus hit a female worker of MTS Fabrics at Telirchala in Kaliakoir on her way to the workplace around 8.00am, police and witnesses said.
As a rumour spread that the female garment worker died in the road crash, several hundreds of workers of MTS Fabrics and some adjacent RMG units took to the street and put up the barricade at Telirchala.
To disperse the crowds, police charged batons and fired teargas canisters, leaving some workers injured, according to reports.
A chase and counter-chase also took place between police and workers. The agitated workers also vandalized some vehicles.
Traffic situation returned to normal as the workers withdrew the blockade at 10.45am.
