Last updated: July 30, 2010
Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) -Thousands of readymade apparel workers on Friday staged demonstration at different parts of the capital Dhaka protesting the newly declared wage structure.
The agitating garment workers demanded BDT 5,000 as minimum wage instead of BDT 3,000.
Agitating workers of several garment factories took to the streets in Mohakhali, Gulshan, Banani, Maghbazar and Karwan Bazar areas. They also put barricades on the streets, police and witnesses said.
The workers also vandalized several buses, private cars and motorcycles.
Additional police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel have been deployed in the areas to keep the law and order situation stable.
On Thursday, the Bangladesh government announced the minimum wages structure for apparel workers, fixing BDT 3,000 as minimum pay for grade-7 workers.
The new wage structure will come into effect from November 1 this year.
