Apparel workers protest in Bangladesh capital for wage, bonus

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- Hundreds of workers of a garment factory staged demonstration demanding wages and festival bonuses at Kalyanpur area in the capital Dhaka on Saturday, police said.
The protesting workers also blockaded the busy Mirpur-New Market Road for nearly two hours, which seriously disrupted vehicular movements at the areas caused immense sufferings for passengers.
The trouble erupted at about 8:15am (local time) when around 1000 workers of a garment located at Darus Salam Road came out on the street demanding payments in the form of salaries and festival allowances, witnesses said.
On information, police rushed to the spot and talked to the factory management to resolve the crisis.
The protesting garment workers later withdrew the protest program as owners promised to clear wages and bonuses by August 13 and August 16 respectively.
“Additional number of law enforcer has been deployed around the factory premises to avert any further trouble,” a police official said, adding that another garment factory in Kazipara also faced such protest in the afternoon.
