Last updated: October 13, 2010

Chittagong, Bangladesh (BBN) - Army will be deployed at Chittagong seaport to end the prolonged stalemate caused by agitation of dock workers and keep the port operational, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan said.

“The army has already been called in,” the minister was quoted by The Daily Star, a local newspaper, as saying after holding a meeting with a portion of dockers at the rest house of Chittagong Port on Wednesday.

The minister also said no compromise with the workers who created the stalemate situation in the port.

The government came up with the decision as the stalemate at the six General Cargo Berths (GCB) of the port was prevailing for the third day Wednesday following the dock workers’ demonstration to realize their demands.

Mr. Khan continued his efforts to put an end to the crisis. He will hold further meetings with leaders of the agitating workers this afternoon. He hoped that crisis would be resolved by Wednesday.
