Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - The central bank of Bangladesh is instilling a socially responsible financing ethos in the entire banking sector for achieving inclusive economic growth with rapid poverty alleviation.
“For some years now, Bangladesh Bank (BB) has been instilling socially responsible financing ethos in the entire banking sector, to realize our vision of high, inclusive economic growth with rapid poverty alleviation,” BB Governor Dr. Atiur Rahman said while inaugurating the 110 years celebration of Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) in Bangladesh on Thursday morning.
The central bank chief also said the financial inclusion campaign from the central bank with multifaceted innovative programs targeting farm and off farm productive economic activities is thus far the major driver of inclusive growth in Bangladesh.
Further, BB has been promoting environment friendly green growth through extension of financing facilities for various green initiatives, BB Governor Dr. Rahman added.
“Rapid digitization in the banking sector, widening of mobile financial services and no-frill accounts for disadvantaged population segments are not only improving financial mobility but also reducing inequality through empowering the poor,” the governor explained.
Regarding the United Kingdom-based foreign bank, Dr. Rahman said the Standard Chartered has always been our good partner, contributing significantly towards the economic development of Bangladesh through innovation of new financial products, facilitating banking, particularly, trade services, and promoting employment generation.
“I am happy to say that Standard Chartered has been an active player in this campaign, with many humanitarian activities, such as, taking the lead role in establishing and running a cluster based Day Care Centre in Gulshan for the bank employees, distributing winter cloths to the destitute, and so on,” he observed.
Among others Robert W. Gibson, British High Commissioner in Bangladesh and Abrar A. Anwar, Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bangladesh spoke on the occasion, held at the SCB Headquarter in the capital Dhaka.
