Ban on Hilsa catch starts in Bangladesh

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)- An 11-day restriction has been imposed by directorate of fishing against netting Hilsa throughout the waters of Bangladesh from zero hour of October  13 to October 23for ensuring safe spawning, protect the breeding environment and conserve the mother fish from any disturbances.

Divisional fisheries directorate office said wide propagation activities including advertisements in media, sticking posters, hanging banners, arranging exchange of views with the fellow fishermen and concerned authorities have been done to make the moratorium  successful.

The district and upazila administrations, navy, coast guards and lawmen have been asked to carry out the directives and take actions against breaches. Mobile courts will conduct drives in the rivers and estuary and bazaars in this regard.

Under the Fishery Ordinance amended on October 25, 2005, anyone violating the ban may be fined BDT 1,000 with 1-6 months' imprisonment for the first time and the punishment would be doubled if the same offender violates the law.
