Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Bangladesh has been categorised as the 31 miserable country in the world, according to a research.

A total of 90 countries listed in the misery index were selected based on data from the Economist Intelligence Unit and calculations from Steve Hanke, a professor of Applied Economics at Johns Hopkins University.

The formula used to compile the list involves inflation, lending rates, and unemployment rates minus year-on-year per capita GDP growth, according to Hanke.

Bangladesh was ranked at 31 with a misery index of 20.8 percent with interest rate as its major contributing factor.

However, Bangladesh done well compared to its neighbours India and Pakistan which are ranked at 21 and 28 respectively in the list with a misery index of 25.6 percent and 21.9 percent with interest rate as both of the countries key contributing factors.

Venezuela topped as the most miserable country in the world with a misery index of 79.4 percent with inflation as its major contributing factor, the paper added.

The research ranked Japan as the least miserable country in the world with an index of 5.41 percent.
