Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-Bangladesh has agreed to allow India to transmit 6,000 megawatt of power from an Indian state to another through its territory joining the proposed regional grid connectivity.
Bangladeshi Power Secretary Monwar Islam made the announcement at a press briefing shortly after the 7th meeting of the Bangladesh-India Joint Steering Committee on Power Sector Cooperation in Dhaka on Thursday.
As per the decision of the meeting, Bangladesh has agreed to provide corridor to use its land for electricity transmission from India’s north-eastern side to north-western side.
Bhutan and Nepal will also work in the transmission of the electricity.
Bangladesh can benefit from the interconnection line as there will be tapping point for Bangladesh, experts said.
A committee has been formed to study feasibility of establishing a new power network between Assam and Bihar in the northeast of India through Bangladesh's Dinajpur district, some 338 km northwest of capital Dhaka they added.
The committee has been asked to submit a feasibility study report within six months, they said.
Bangladesh Power Secretary Monwar Islam and Indian Power Secretary Prodeep Kumar Sinha led their respective side at the meeting.
