Bangladesh alerts administrations over Burma polls

Last updated: October 28, 2010

Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN) - The government has asked the district administrations and border guards in Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban to remain alert during the general elections in neighbouring Burma.

The army-ruled Burma, officially known as Myanmar, will hold its first ‘democratic’ election in two decades on November 7 this year.

The government has also asked the authorities concerned to keep illegal Burma, officially known as Myanmar, citizens and Rohingya refugees under watch so that no untoward incident could take place during the elections in bordering areas.

The instructions were given at an inter-ministerial meeting held at the foreign ministry on Wednesday with Foreign Minister Dipu Moni in the chair, according to reports.

The authorities concerned have been asked to take precaution so that illegal Burmese citizens and refugees could not be recorded as Bangladesh citizens during the population and housing census.

The Bangladesh government is going to carry out the 5th population and housing census during March 15–19, using digital technology for the first time.
