Dhaka, Bangladesh (BBN)-A feasibility study, which had been implemented to assess the potential of developing coalbed methane (CBM) projects at the Jamalganj coalfield in Bangladesh, are expected to be extended by a year.
The extension is due to an increase in costs for the project, local newspaper reports.
The government decided to prospect for CBM on 6 acres of land at Petrobangala’s Jamalganj coalfield, with a view to meeting the country’s ever-growing energy demand, according to Natural Gas Asia.
This is the first ever initiative to test CBM potential in Bangladesh, reports worldcoal.
A Petrobangala official said he was not sure the project would be completed within this extended year, and that the feasibility study may take longer to complete.
The study was supposed to be completed by March 2014.
“We are going to implement the feasibility study for the extraction of CBM at the Jamalganj coalfield project by engaging an internationally reputed consulting firm, using our own resources,” the general manager of Petrobangla and project director, Akhtaruzzaman, said.
Three core wells are expected to be drilled, Akhtaruzzaman added.
